Beauty Blog #5: Lash Discovery by Maybelline

My name is Graylin Fox and I’m a mascara addict. Seriously, I have 30 different kinds in the bathroom drawer as I type this. One of the tubes I’ll never be without is Maybelline’s Lash Discovery.  I have fine hair, on my head and in my lashes. They’re also blonde. Which makes mascara a tricky thing. I have to find them before I can do anything else.

I love small brushes for ‘search and tint’ operations. Primers work well, but most of them are white and that doesn’t help blonde lashes! Ack! So I keep this mascara with me. It even works to brush out clumps from other “thickening” brands.

So, if you have lashes you can’t find with those big brushes, use this first. It does what is says and finds the smallest little lashes.

Happy Beauty!

Clinical psychologist Ellie Quinn is starting a brand new job at a hospital in Savannah. She doesn’t expect the amorous attentions of quick-tempered ex-cop Owen Mata and handsome Russian surgeon Dmitri Komarnitskaia. But choosing between the two is soon the least of her worries. When she persuades a battered woman to leave her husband, Ellie finds herself the target of a sinister serial killer, and something about the case is making Owen increasingly unstable. Only with Dmitri does she feel safe, but if she can’t bring her psychological skills to bear to catch the killer, she won’t be the only one in danger.

Beauty Blog #4: IT Cosmetics CC Cream

I have found the holy grail of makeup for me, it’s Innovative Technology Cosmetics CC Cream.

ITCCCreamI’ve used this now for two weeks and finished it off with IT’s Bye Bye Pores Powder. WOW. I live in the southern US where the temperature has been 80 outside and 90+ in my car when I run errands. This is the first full cover foundation I’ve used that takes the through the entire day, never feels like I have anything on, and I STAY DRY all day.

No oil, no grease, no build up. Nothing. Just as soft and dry at 8 pm as it was in the morning. My skin is better as well because of the lack of buildup throughout the day, removing my make up takes less effort.

Never thought I would find something that did this. I love my other foundations and can’t bring myself to throw them out, but I’ve found the one I’ll use 90% of the time.

Have you tried it? What did you think?

Beauty Blog Post #3: Wen Hair Care

One of my clients complimented my hair recently and found out I’m capable of doing a full informercial in 10 minutes flat. I love Wen. It’s an unnatural passionate love for hair care that can keep my “so thin you can see through it in the pool” fine hair healthy even on bad hair days.

Holy Crap

Wen was created by Chaz Dean, a colorist, to keep the color in his clients hair longer. Well hell, sign me up. I had to start coloring my hair when I was 30. For some odd universal entity decided that at the exact moment I grew out gray hairs, my blonde hair would darken, but only at the roots. Nice joke.

I had to start coloring my hair and it takes a toll. My hair is so fine a five minute breeze outside works as well as the best hair dryer. My hair started thinning. CRAP! Not the best thing.

I found Wen in 2012. I tried it for a while but it was expensive and I didn’t see much of a difference. Turns out, I used it wrong. So after watching Chaz tell everyone over and over how to use it on QVC, I ordered a small bottle and gave it another chance.

That’s it, I’m hooked. I have all the “flavors” and my clients compliment my hair, which never happened before. Not only that, I keep the replenishing mist spray in my desk at the office. The Winter Vanilla Mint one… nom nom nom.. so any flyaways, caught in the rain during lunch, I’m feeling nasties, can be sprayed away in a few spritzes.

I’m all in with this now. I have the oils to condition your scalp that I use once a week and the travel packets (2 oz. each) so I can take it on the road with me.

See you next week,

I wrote this poem after 9/11. It still applies today. I’d hoped it would never be relevant again. Boston, you remain in my thoughts, even after they catch the men involved, as you heal.

The smoke still rises from NY and DC
the work could take months to complete
but we excel at repair and rebuild

We fought to build this country
and defend it we will
our principles cannot be torn by bombs

You have awakened a nation
that didn’t know it was asleep
and when you attack us from the outside
We descend on you as ONE.

Bodies were broken and torn
families have been ripped apart
You have caused a wound we will never forget
but it will heal

The anger of hundreds of millions
are now pointed at a few thousand
and we are not alone

The world will not stand still
you have no place to hide
flashlights are now being carried
by every nation and nationality
~even your own

Our flag can be blown apart
but everyone of us carries
the threads in our souls

It will always fly

Beauty Blog Post #2: Tarte Maracuja Self Tanner

Tarte Self Tanner

I love Tarte Cosmetics. It’s all organic, the packaging is recycled, and the colors are fantastic. Yet, when they came out with a self-tanner I was doubtful.

Holy Crap

See, I’m practically translucent. So when a product says it can tan you without turning orange, I doubt it.

Tarte didn’t lie. I can tan, slowly, with this product and not turn orange. They say it doesn’t smell like self tanner, it does. Just as bad as the rest of them. What it does do is tan me and then fade away without leaving those spots that look like age-spots. Even on my face. Hence the photo of my see-through face right here.

It’s now my go-to self tanner. I don’t use anything else. I still lay out in the sun, those posts are coming up this summer, but in the winter I can put on two layers of this, even on my face, and get a great tan for myself and not have to worry about looking scaly a week later.

See you next week,

Beauty Blog #1: Haute Gel Nails

I have a confession to make: I’m a skincare/makeup/hair care junkie. At 47 years old, the effortless look I aim for takes a lot of work. I started indulging my beauty product addiction in graduate school. I returned to college after a 17 year successful career in Information Technology. Yep, I was a professional nerd.

I went back to school and got my doctorate in psychology. I can tell you from experience that a person with serious mental health issues is easier and nicer to talk to than a “blue screen of death.” Since my grad school career started when I was 40, my classmates looked fabulous while I aged rapidly. After all, we were in South Florida. Studying for finals on the beach is great until you realize you baked new wrinkles into your face. ACK!

This blog will cover items I use personally. I won’t be making treks out to beauty supply stores to stock up on the latest things. I’m pretty good at that already and have a large collection of things under my bathroom sink.

haute gel nailsToday, I’m talking about Haute Gel Nail at home nail kit. I ordered this because I love to have painted nails but I’m hard on them. Anything on my hands needs to handle cooking, cleaning, typing, scrubbing.. every day things. If I have to baby my hands to keep polish on, I take it off.

It is easy to apply. The gel goes on a little thicker than regular polish. I put it on four fingers and then placed them in the light. It talks to you. It says you can press the button for 5 seconds to get her to stop talking. I couldn’t get that to work. BUT, it does bake the nails dry in 60 seconds. Yeah, I know, 60 seconds. So I put on a second coat and it baked in 60 seconds. I used the included wipes to take off the tacky film and my nails have been shiny for seven straight days. No chips, bumps, cracking, anything. I’m happily surprised.

You can even see where I messed up in application still there a week later. These are advertised to last two weeks. I’m getting antsy here and might change the color before then. For me, it’s worth the price to be able to have great looking nails for an entire week.

I already own the light, which is the expensive part of the kit, so I can buy as many colors (and Haute makes some fabulous ones) as I want.

Thanks for stopping by my new Beauty Blog weekly feature, check back for more!
