Thanks to Rebecca Royce I have a new shiny project. This WIP hits close to home as the heroine has a job that isvery close to what I do. I will make sure to give her a better, more complicated love life, and a nicer home.
So here is a small snippet of the first draft…
~~~
Monday I would be paraded around the hospital by the disgustingly cheery human resources woman. She dressed like a “proper” southern woman. I’ve been southern my whole life and still don’t know why that means polyester clothing, helmet hair, and enough perfume to choke the unconscious man on the stretcher in the elevator with us.
Her accent was syrup-southern, the one that women put on in the south when they don’t like you and are pretending to be polite. I hate that sound. I always look for the knife because overly nice southern women are planning something and I want to make sure I see it coming.
~~~
This project has hijacked my brain for the near future.
Be sure to check out everyone else’s snippets today at Http://www.sixsunday.com

It sounds like a great story evolving for you. I loved the description. Thank you for sharing it, so early in it’s life.

Great description of a southern woman
August 7, 2011 at 9:52 am
Well it seems those proper Southern Belles are folk to watch out for. Great foreshadowing here.

Really authentic description! Evocative!

Not only did I love the character’s attitude, but I adored the description. I could totally see the situation play out. Great six.

Being from the South, I could hear that syrupy sweet twang in my head as I read. Nicely done…

Love, love, LOVE this description and the insight into your character. Whoever said you nailed it…yeppers! Kudos to you…and to Rebecca for whatever she did/said to get this on the page.
(Please don’t take this the wrong way…but I like this voice much better than the fairy-elf-whimsy.)

Excellent six! They set us up for where the heroine is and what she thinks of all the posturing! Love it!

Keep going. Love how you describe the woman
August 7, 2011 at 1:59 pm
You’re setting up a very interesting storyline. I’m liking your MC already and want to see what you do from here.
August 7, 2011 at 2:00 pm
Sounds like you’re off to a great start! The information that comes across in this Six is very telling. Not only about the Southern woman, but about the person’s whose POV you’re in! Very well done! And, BTW, I bought an IPad for my daughter for her birthday and plan on getting her hooked on your YA novels! I know she will enjoy them as much as I do! It arrives this week! Yeah!

Thank you Kathleen, you made my heart sing with that compliment. I hope she loves them too.
August 7, 2011 at 2:44 pm
I am a southern woman and I can hear and see her vivdly. Nicely done, Graylin. Reminds me of that famous southerrn sayin’ “Bless your heart.” which really means I want to brutally murder you.
August 7, 2011 at 3:49 pm
To say I know women like that would be a bit of an understatement. *scratches the scars on her back* LOL
August 7, 2011 at 4:16 pm
Such a great description!
August 7, 2011 at 5:18 pm
I can testify your description of that type of Southern women is 100% accurate. I’m not a “proper” Southern woman myself but I will admit to using that syrup voice you mention, in the exact way you describe. You nailed this, it’s awesome!
August 7, 2011 at 5:24 pm
Only six lines and already I’m hooked! The voice is clear and wonderfully real. I’m from the south–I know those women you’re describing. She’d better be careful! Great six!
August 7, 2011 at 5:47 pm
Your descriptions are spot-on. Well done!
August 7, 2011 at 8:46 pm
Love the characters voice and the descriptions! I look forward to reading more.
August 7, 2011 at 10:28 pm
Love her voice. Enjoyed your six.

“overly nice southern women are planning something “… that’s because we are all S.L.U.T. S.(Southern Ladies Up To Something!)
August 8, 2011 at 10:35 am
Very intriguing! Great six!
August 9, 2011 at 8:13 pm
Y’all gotta problem with women from the South? *bats eyelashes*
August 12, 2011 at 11:40 am
